9.  Hall of Fame – Situated on the airport road, Hall of fame, is just 2 km from the heart of Leh city. The two stories of the museum display all the seized weapons and equipments from the enemy during the course of different wars. Located in the Hanle River Valley, it is also the site for HanleMonastery, which was built in the 17th century. The Hanle observatory is operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bengaluru with an installed telescope of about 2.01 m. 15.  Umling La Pass – Placed at an altitude of 19,300 ft, and still not being present on the Google Maps, Umling La Pass, has overtaken Khardung La to become the highest motorable road in the world, built and maintained by the Border Roads Organization, as part of Project Himank. This is an adventure lovers paradise, as the land leading upto the pass and the pass itself is completely barren, the only voice you will be hearing is of the wind gushing in your face from both directions. There are two distinct routes that take you up the pass, one from Fukche, which requires a special permit signed from DM, Leh and second from Hanle either via Photi La or Ukdungle which requires regular permits visting Leh. You can enjoy the picturesque view en-route from June to October, during which the roads remain open. If you are travelling in June or in October, you would probably the very few people traversing this road and hence, can enjoy it in its entirety. 16.  Shey Palace – Shey Monastery and Shey Palace, is located at a distance of approx. 15 km from Leh city on the Leh – Manali road. It enshrines the Du-Khang with an almost 10 m high copper with glided gold statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, believed to be the second highest statue in Ladakh. 17.  Thikshey Monastery – It is one of the largest monasteries in Ladakh, situated on a hill top overlooking the Stok range, just 19 km from Leh city on the Leh – Manali highway. The route leading up to the monastery is lined with stupas and prayer walls. It is well noted for its resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. It is a twelve storeyed complex and houses many items of Buddhist art such as stupas, statues, thangkas, wall paintings and swords. It also resides in itself, the largest Maitreya Buddha of Ladakh, an enormous 15 m or two storeyed staute. The Maitreya Temple, in which this statue is housed, was constructed inside the Thiksey Monastery to commemorate the visit of 14th Dalai Lama in 1970. The monastery manages the ancient site of Nyarma and also is the site for a school for novices and a Tibetan medicine centre. Thiksey monastery also marks the first Gelugpa establishment in Ladakh to extend the influence of Gelugpa teachings. Some of the important monasteries being administered by Thiksey are Nyarma, Diskit, Hunder, Insta and Stagmo. 18.  Hemis monastery – Hemis monastery was re-established in 1672 by Sengge Namgyal, in Hemis, around 45 km from Leh to honour the Drukpa Lineage. The famous festival of Padmasambhava, is held in Hemis Monastery every year in June. It is one of the richest monasteries and also hosts the 2 – day religious festival, the Hemis festival. The major attraction of the Hemis festival is the unfurling of the giant thangka, which is basically a religious painting, unfurled in front of the ever gathering crowd. 19.  Leh Market mall road – A perfect place to spend out the evenings after a long day. You have a whole range of restaurants to explore from and shop out your wallets. 20.  Changla Pass – Located at a height of 5360 m above sea level, Chang La Pass is the third highest motorable road in the world. It gets its name after a saint named Changla Baba and also has a temple dedicated to him. It lays en-route Pangong Lake while traversing the distance from Leh. The roads on either side of the pass are very steep, mainly loose gravel and hence, become treacherous especially during winters. Small streams of water flows during summers which again makes the pass difficult and adventurous at the same time. 21.  Diskit monastery – Located in the Nubra Valley,en-route Hunder,Diskit Monastery is one of the oldest and biggest monasteries in Ladakh region. It is around 115 km from Leh and one has to cross through the mighty Khardung La Pass to reach Diskit. It represents the Gelukpa sect of Buddhism and is administered by the Thiksey Monastery. It was founded in the 14t century by ChangzemTserabZangpo, it also runs a school for Tibetan children, supported by Lungta, “The Tibet Support Group”, which is primarily an NGO and provides the children with education in computers, science and english. Diskit monastery is also famous for the “Dosmoche” festival, which literally translates to “Festival of the Scapegoat”. The festival being celebrated in the month of February, is attended mainly by the locals of Nubra Valley as the rest of Ladakh is virtually cut out due to heavy snowfall in winters. Amidst guardian gods and huge drums, the main attraction of this monastery is the statue of crowned Buddha also known as the Cho Rinpoche, in the prayer hall. 22.  Chushul – Chushul is a small village located in the Chushul valley, strategically very important to India as it very close to the Line of Actual Control with China. The valley is famous for some historic battles fought across the LAC. Rezang La is the ridge line that follows the Chushul village and the fierce battle fought between Chinese army and PVC Major Shaitan Singh with his men of 5 platoons, during the 1962 Sino-Indian War was also fought along the Rezang La in the Chushul valley. 24.  Sumoor - Sumoor is a small village under the district administration of Nubra, housing just a few over 150 homes. The importance of this small village lies in it being the anceint trade route connecting Khasgar in China to Ladakh in India. There is an ancient fort at the top of the hill just above the local monastery. The monastery is one of the biggest in the Nubra Valley, which was founded by Lama TsultimNima around 1830s. There is huge rock craving dating from 8-9th century AD. You can witness sand dunes, double humped camel, flowers of different types across the village marking its beauty and serenity. 25.  Panamik - Another small village lying in the Nubra Valley, Panamik is famous for hot water springs. It also marks one of the last destinations for tourists visiting Ladakh. Lying at a distance of approx. 150 km from Leh, this village summarizes a total natural beauty with flower laden trees, and high peaks rising from the valley. 26.  Kaksangla – With an elevation of 5,436 m / 17,834 ft, Kaksang la is one of the high passes in Ladakh region. Locals claim this road as “hell”, as the road leading to the summit is very adventurous and challenging, starting as a paved road, turning into a mule track near the summit. Also known as the Chushul – Mahe Road, this pass is probably the highest a foreign tourist can go in India. Avalanches, heavy snowfall and landslides are common in the area and hence, as a warning, it is recommended to use a 4 x 4 vehicle to traverse the path here. This is indeed an adventure lover’s road as you can expect small landslides, rocks here and there, hair pin bends, cold winds hitting like knife, and dangerous drop offs. Since the road is rarely used and hacks into the mountains, it becomes very challenging when planning for such a trip. 27.  Spituk monastery – located well within the Leh city, Spituk monastery is just around 6 km from the city centre. This is the only monastery which is co-located with a Kali Mata Mandir. The giant idol of Kali Mata is unveiled during the annual festival of Spituk festival else the whole year round, the idol is kept covered with a cloth. Being founded in the 11th century, the monastery was initially established by the Red Hat Institution, and later taken over by the Yellow Hat sect in the 15th century. Located well within the town, the monastery offers lovely view of the airport, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Hall of fame and Khardung la ranges, and hence, is a very popular and attractive spot for photography. 28.  Tsemo Gompa – The Namgyal Tsemo Monastery or the Tsemo Gompa, was built by TashiNamgyal in 1430, and is suitably located on a hill top just behind the Leh Palace. It is a crag top shrine and houses a 3 storeyed Futuristic Buddha statue. It also houses sacred scriptures, water coloured paintings and more importantly Padmapani and Manjushri, both of which are revered elements of Buddhist faith.

29.  Zorawar fort – Built in 1836, for Zorawar Singh Kahluria, a military general of Dogra Rajput ruler, Gulab Singh. It was restored in 2006. In its earlier days, the fort was mainly used for keeping the wealth of the Dogra dynasty rulers. In its present days, the Zorawar fort attracts its tourists towards The War Room, The History Room and The Artefacts Room. There is a ticket that you need to get either from the Hall of fame or from the fort itself, to go around its walls. The War Room showcases the secret strategic planning room of the Dogra dynasty during war times. The Artefacts Room showcases the cookware, utensils, belts, shields, armorsetc used by the warriors during war times. The History Room showcases the valuable information on the various battles fought like The First Ladakh Campaign, The Baltistan Campaign, The Tibet Campaign, The Great Reverse and the Re-conquest of Ladakh. 30.  Gurdwara Datun Sahib – Located well in the heart of the city, this small gurudwara shares the wall with the main mosque. The gurudwara glorifies the sacred “Datun” or “miswak” tree planted by Guru Nanak Dev ji on his second visit in the area. The tree planted, was the first vegetation planted in the area, and, hence its significance. The gurudwara is being maintained by the GurudwaraPrabandhak Committee of Leh, the tree itself has grown to be the biggest tree in the city. 31.  Stok Palace – It is conveniently located around 15 km from Leh city and is the official residence of the royal family of Ladakh.
