9.  Hall of Fame – Situated on the airport road, Hall of fame, is just 2 km from the heart of Leh city. 15.  Umling La Pass – Placed at an altitude of 19,300 ft, and still not being present on the Google Maps, Umling La Pass, has overtaken Khardung La to become the highest motorable road in the world, built and maintained by the Border Roads Organization, as part of Project Himank. 17.  Thikshey Monastery – It is one of the largest monasteries in Ladakh, situated on a hill top overlooking the Stok range, just 19 km from Leh city on the Leh – Manali highway. The route leading up to the monastery is lined with stupas and prayer walls. It is well noted for its resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. It is a twelve storeyed complex and houses many items of Buddhist art such as stupas, statues, thangkas, wall paintings and swords. It also resides in itself, the largest Maitreya Buddha of Ladakh, an enormous 15 m or two storeyed staute. 18.  Hemis monastery – Hemis monastery was re-established in 1672 by Sengge Namgyal, in Hemis, around 45 km from Leh to honour the Drukpa Lineage. The famous festival of Padmasambhava, is held in Hemis Monastery every year in June. It is one of the richest monasteries and also hosts the 2 – day religious festival, the Hemis festival. 20.  Changla Pass – Located at a height of 5360 m above sea level, Chang La Pass is the third highest motorable road in the world. The roads on either side of the pass are very steep, mainly loose gravel and hence, become treacherous especially during winters. 21.  Diskit monastery – Located in the Nubra Valley,en-route Hunder,Diskit Monastery is one of the oldest and biggest monasteries in Ladakh region. It is around 115 km from Leh and one has to cross through the mighty Khardung La Pass to reach Diskit. It represents the Gelukpa sect of Buddhism and is administered by the Thiksey Monastery. 22.  Chushul – Chushul is a small village located in the Chushul valley, strategically very important to India as it very close to the Line of Actual Control with China. 26.  Kaksangla – With an elevation of 5,436 m / 17,834 ft, Kaksang la is one of the high passes in Ladakh region. Locals claim this road as “hell”, as the road leading to the summit is very adventurous and challenging, starting as a paved road, turning into a mule track near the summit. Also known as the Chushul – Mahe Road, this pass is probably the highest a foreign tourist can go in India. Avalanches, heavy snowfall and landslides are common in the area and hence, as a warning, it is recommended to use a 4 x 4 vehicle to traverse the path here. This is indeed an adventure lover’s road as you can expect small landslides, rocks here and there, hair pin bends, cold winds hitting like knife, and dangerous drop offs. 27.  Spituk monastery – located well within the Leh city, Spituk monastery is just around 6 km from the city centre. This is the only monastery which is co-located with a Kali Mata Mandir. The giant idol of Kali Mata is unveiled during the annual festival of Spituk festival else the whole year round, the idol is kept covered with a cloth. Being founded in the 11th century, the monastery was initially established by the Red Hat Institution, and later taken over by the Yellow Hat sect in the 15th century. 28.  Tsemo Gompa – The Namgyal Tsemo Monastery or the Tsemo Gompa, was built by TashiNamgyal in 1430, and is suitably located on a hill top just behind the Leh Palace. It also houses sacred scriptures, water coloured paintings and more importantly Padmapani and Manjushri, both of which are revered elements of Buddhist faith.

29.  Zorawar fort – Built in 1836, for Zorawar Singh Kahluria, a military general of Dogra Rajput ruler, Gulab Singh. It was restored in 2006. In its earlier days, the fort was mainly used for keeping the wealth of the Dogra dynasty rulers. In its present days, the Zorawar fort attracts its tourists towards The War Room, The History Room and The Artefacts Room. There is a ticket that you need to get either from the Hall of fame or from the fort itself, to go around its walls. The War Room showcases the secret strategic planning room of the Dogra dynasty during war times. 30.  Gurdwara Datun Sahib – Located well in the heart of the city, this small gurudwara shares the wall with the main mosque.
